At Aeralife, every story matters – and supporting residents to continue living life your way begins with understanding the person behind the care.
Every resident who joins an Aeralife community brings a lifetime of experiences, achievements, interests and passions that have shaped who they are. Moving into aged care shouldn’t mean leaving those important parts of life behind. It should create new opportunities for people to continue doing what they love, explore their interests and enjoy meaningful experiences each day.
For Annie, a resident at Aeralife that sense of meaning and enjoyment comes through creativity.
A former teacher, Annie has always had a love of learning and sharing knowledge with others. Her curiosity and willingness to keep developing her skills have stayed with her throughout her life – and continue to shine through in her passion for painting.
A passion that continues to grow
Annie regularly participates in painting sessions at Aeralife Pennant Hills, where two professional artists work with residents to encourage creativity, introduce new techniques and help each person develop their own artistic style.
What began as an enjoyable activity has grown into a genuine passion for Annie. She takes great pride in every piece she creates and looks forward to each opportunity to experiment with colour, practise her techniques and learn something new.
Each artwork reflects the time, thought and care Annie puts into her painting. The sessions give her the freedom to make her own creative choices, express herself and experience the satisfaction that comes from seeing an idea take shape on the canvas.
Painting has become much more than a way to pass the time. It provides Annie with a sense of achievement and another opportunity to continue learning – something that has always been an important part of her life.
Her story shows that living life your way can mean continuing to grow, create and pursue the interests that bring you happiness, regardless of age.
The value of creativity in aged care
Meaningful activities play an important role in supporting quality of life in residential aged care. The Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission highlights the importance of enabling older people to make choices, participate in activities that are meaningful to them, maintain social connections and live in line with their preferences. For Annie, painting provides an opportunity to express herself, continue learning and experience the satisfaction of creating something uniquely her own.
Group sessions can also encourage social connection. Residents can spend time together, exchange ideas and celebrate one another’s work in a welcoming and supportive environment. For some, an activity may reconnect them with a long-held interest. For others, it can be an opportunity to discover something completely new.
Importantly, there is no single way to be creative. Each resident can participate in a way that reflects their interests, abilities and personal goals. The value is found not only in the finished artwork, but also in the enjoyment, connection and sense of accomplishment experienced along the way.
At Aeralife, opportunities such as Annie’s painting sessions form part of our commitment to creating meaningful experiences that recognise the individuality of every resident.
Personalised care that celebrates individuality
Personalised care goes beyond supporting a person’s everyday needs. It begins with taking the time to understand their story: what they enjoy, what matters to them and what helps them feel most like themselves.
Whether it’s painting, music, gardening, cooking, movement, spending time outdoors or connecting with family and friends, every resident should have opportunities to enjoy the things that give their life purpose and meaning.
For Annie, regular art sessions and the guidance of experienced artists have allowed her passion for painting to flourish. They provide a supportive space where she can build her confidence, explore new possibilities and continue developing her skills.
It’s a wonderful example of how personalised support can help residents continue living life your way, while remaining connected to the interests and qualities that have shaped their lives.
Every story matters
Annie’s story is one of many across our Aeralife communities.
Behind every resident is a unique life filled with memories, experiences, relationships, talents and passions worth recognising. When we understand and celebrate those individual stories, we can create opportunities for residents to keep learning, contributing and enjoying the moments that matter most.
For Annie, those moments are found in the joy of painting, the excitement of trying something new and the pride she feels in each finished piece.
Because at Aeralife, every story matters – and we’re proud to support every resident in living life your way.
