A life of service, strength, and now, well-deserved support and community
At Aeralife Northcote, every resident brings with them a lifetime of stories, character, and experiences. One such resident is Eugenie – a warm, thoughtful, and resilient woman whose life has been shaped by compassion, courage, and connection.
Born in Egypt to a family of Greek, Maltese, and Italian heritage, Eugenie was a British subject during a time of political unrest, and her family eventually relocated to London’s East End. It was there that her caring nature took root – nurtured by a close-knit family and a deep love for her younger sister.
After migrating to Australia 59 years ago as a “Ten Pound Pom,” Eugenie built a new life grounded in service to others. She trained as a mothercraft nurse at the Royal Women’s Hospital in Melbourne, caring for young children and supporting countless families. “I always enjoyed looking after my sister,” she recalls. “That’s how I knew I wanted to keep helping people.”
Whether through nursing, advocating for public housing, or raising her three children as a devoted single mother, Eugenie’s life has always been centred around community. Despite personal hardship – including the heart-breaking loss of her son – her warmth, humour, and positivity continue to shine through.
“Everyone has been lovely” – the Northcote experience
Now a resident at Aeralife Northcote, Eugenie has found not only the medical support she needs – including help managing her type 1 diabetes and stroke recovery – but also a true sense of community and care.
“I’ve been so impressed with the staff here,” she says with a smile. “From the manager to the nurses, carers, and lifestyle team – everyone has been lovely, sweet, and welcoming.”
It’s easy to see how Eugenie is so well loved. She lights up the room with her presence, and her gentle kindness draws people in. From daily chats with friends to spontaneous laughs with staff, she has built meaningful relationships that bring joy to her every day.
“I join in everything I can – the exercises, the games, the music. Even happy hour!” she laughs. “I don’t drink, but I love the atmosphere and being with others.” A lifelong fan of Elvis Presley and The Beatles, music still plays a joyful role in her life.

A life still full of meaning
Her daughter recently visited and echoed what many others feel when stepping into Northcote: “This is the best place I’ve seen. It feels safe, comfortable, and like a real home.”
Though she doesn’t use a mobile phone, Eugenie keeps in close contact with friends via her landline. She was mid-conversation with her dear friend Margaret when we arrived to speak with her – a small moment that reflects the importance of connection in her life.
Advice for future generations
“Look after and appreciate your elders – and have respect for all those you meet.”
Eugenie’s advice for the younger generation is simple but heartfelt: “Look after and appreciate your elders – and have respect for all those you meet.”
It’s a reflection of the life she’s lived – one filled with empathy, resilience, and deep humanity. And now, surrounded by a community that values her for exactly who she is, Eugenie is embracing this next chapter with dignity, laughter, and love.
