At Aeralife Queanbeyan, we’re lucky to have residents whose lives are full of heart, history and quiet wisdom. One of them is Frank Williams – a man whose story is shaped by love, service, faith and a deep sense of family. It’s a story he was happy to share his aged care resident story.
From Sutton Manor to Queanbeyan
Frank was born in 1938 in Sutton Manor, a small town in St Helens, England. He grew up in a close-knit Catholic family where going to church on Sundays was just part of life. He remembers making his First Communion at age seven and later becoming an altar boy – learning Latin so he could take part in the Mass. His faith, which began early, is still an important part of who he is today.
At school, Frank was proud to be named head boy at St. Teresa’s Catholic School. That’s also where he discovered his love for soccer. He laughs about not being tall enough to go professional, but he was proud to play for his district team – and some of his teammates even went on to have careers in the big leagues.
A life shared with Marilyn
Frank met Marilyn while working as a second engineer in the merchant navy. They were introduced by a friend, and the connection was instant. The two married in 1965 and built a life together with their four children – three daughters and a son.
Even with long stretches at sea, Frank and Marilyn made it work. In fact, Marilyn would often join him on trips, turning what could’ve been lonely time apart into shared adventures.
In 1976, they took a leap and moved to Australia, settling in Canberra a few years later. It wasn’t an easy decision, but it was one they made together – for opportunity, for family, and for a fresh start.
Finding purpose through work and service
Frank started out as an apprentice toolmaker before heading off to sea with the merchant navy. But his work later took a different turn – into asbestos removal, where he found a sense of purpose. Under the guidance of Trevor Rollins, he became an expert in the field and helped train others along the way. His work made homes safer and helped protect future generations.
He also spent more than 20 years serving as a Justice of the Peace. It was a role he took seriously and found great meaning in. In 2024, he was formally recognised with a certificate of appreciation from the Attorney General – a proud moment.
Family, faith, and a life of joy
Those who know Frank describe him as kind, caring, and full of life. He’s someone who enjoys a good chat, has a great sense of humour, and takes genuine interest in the people around him. He says he’s always been pretty content, and these days he still finds joy in the simple things – dancing, watching football, a good movie, pottering in the garden, and doing the daily quiz.
He also loves tuning in to the radio, especially when he’s out in the garden getting some fresh air. One little ritual he shares with Marilyn is calling in song requests on FM 96.7 – listening to their chosen songs together brightens the day and brings back special memories.
Lately, back pain has meant more time indoors, but he doesn’t let that get him down. Frank and Marilyn spend their days side by side, watching TV, reading the paper, or just having a quiet moment together.
When asked what makes him who he is, he thinks for a second and smiles. “I’m a happy person,” he says simply.
Frank’s aged care resident story at Aeralife Queanbeyan
After the loss of their daughter Beth, who had been their primary carer, Frank and Marilyn made the move into Aeralife Queanbeyan. It was a tough time, and a big adjustment – but one that’s brought some unexpected comfort.
Frank says the staff feel like family. It’s the little things they do each day – the warm greetings, the care, the chats – that make all the difference.
“It’s the people that make this place special,” he says. “Their smiles and commitment brighten my life.”
He’s kept busy with activities that keep both his mind and spirit engaged. Frank enjoys arts and crafts, singalongs, current affairs discussions, and outings – and always makes a point of sharing a kind word or a smile with those around him.
His faith still plays a big role in his life. Whether it’s sitting quietly in reflection, joining in cultural celebrations, or having a heartfelt chat with someone, Frank finds strength in the small but meaningful connections.
Ageing with grace and gratitude
Frank doesn’t see ageing as a time to slow down. For him, it’s about staying involved in the world around him, in whatever way he can. He values the one-on-one visits with staff and family – they help him feel connected, seen, and supported.
Words to live by
Looking back, Frank has a few simple thoughts to share with younger generations:
“Value kindness, cherish your family, and never take your health for granted.”
It’s advice that says a lot about the way he’s lived – and continues to live – his life.
A place to call home
