Aged care lifestyle coordinator Tess with residents at Aeralife Illawong

26 years of passion in aged care: Lifestyle coordinator Tess at Aeralife Illawong

Staff stories

For more than 26 years, Tess has been bringing joy, laughter and meaningful connection to the residents of Aeralife Illawong.

As an experienced aged care lifestyle coordinator, she understands that sometimes it’s the small, everyday moments that matter most – a shared laugh during an activity, a familiar face returning from leave, or a conversation that brings back a memory.

Moments like these are part of what Tess loves most about her role.

As the recipient of the 2025 Aeralife Passion Award, Tess has dedicated her career to creating opportunities for residents to connect, reminisce and feel valued every day.

Finding purpose in aged care

Before entering the aged care sector, Tess spent five years working in a casino. While she enjoyed the experience, she felt something was missing and wanted work that offered a deeper sense of purpose.

That purpose became clear when she began working in aged care.

“It’s not just a job,” Tess said. “It requires passion, kindness, patience and gentleness. At the end of the day, when you know you’ve made somebody happy, even in a small way, that is very fulfilling.”

That sense of fulfilment has kept her motivated for more than two decades. Seeing residents smile and knowing she has helped brighten their day continues to be one of the most rewarding parts of her role as an aged care lifestyle coordinator.

A career that grew over time

Tess began her journey at Illawong in 2001 as a Nursing Assistant. Just seven months later, her manager recognised her potential and encouraged her to step into a new role.

After several years as a Recreational Officer, Tess moved into the Lifestyle Coordinator position in 2007, where she has remained ever since.

Over the years, she has built strong relationships with residents, families and colleagues. Having worked at Illawong for so long, many residents know her well – and notice when she is away.

“When you go on holiday they ask where you’ve been,” she said with a smile. “That means a lot. You feel like you’re part of their family.”

Creating meaningful activities in aged care

As an aged care lifestyle coordinator, Tess focuses on delivering meaningful activities in aged care homes that are tailored to residents’ interests, preferences and life histories.

From sing-alongs and bus outings to painting, games and sensory activities, her goal is always to bring enjoyment and connection to everyday life.

“It’s their choice,” she explained. “It’s not my choice. When residents choose what they want to do, the activity becomes more meaningful.”

Tess regularly seeks feedback from residents and families to help shape the lifestyle program and ensure residents remain involved in decisions about how they spend their time.

Sometimes the most meaningful activities are the simplest. One resident, Robert, enjoys practical tasks such as helping with decorations, gardening and small building projects. Tess encourages these activities because they reflect his background and give him a sense of purpose and contribution.

Supporting residents living with dementia

Tess has also spent many years supporting residents living with dementia and has completed specialist training to better understand and respond to their needs.

She describes the role as both challenging and deeply rewarding, requiring patience, empathy and a calm approach.

“They might not remember your name,” she said, “but they remember your face and how you make them feel.”

Her experience has taught her the importance of understanding behaviours and not taking difficult moments personally.

“It’s not the person – it’s the disease,” she said. “You just need patience and understanding.”

Despite the challenges, Tess says working with dementia residents often brings moments of humour and joy, with residents sharing stories and comments that quickly turn into laughter for everyone involved.

Recognised for passion in aged care

Tess’s dedication to her work was recognised when she received the 2025 Aeralife Passion Award.

The news came as a complete surprise – she was on a cruise with her family when she found out she had won.

While she never expected the recognition, Tess said the award made her feel deeply valued and appreciated.

For her, the recognition was not just about the award itself, but about knowing that the effort and care she puts into her work as an aged care lifestyle coordinator is meaningful to others.

“When you do your work with your heart, people notice,” she said.

Advice for working in aged care

For those considering a career in aged care, Tess has simple but powerful advice – treat residents as you would your own family.

“They have feelings. They understand more than you think,” she said. “Treat them with respect, listen to their needs and do your best with all your heart.”

After 26 years at Illawong, Tess continues to bring that philosophy to her work every day – creating moments of laughter, connection and purpose for the residents who have become like family.
